Schedule 40 is heavy gauge pipe used in industrial and commercial chain link fences.
Almost all of the governmental and industrial chain link fences that we build or install, require a schedule 40 pipe (including but not limited to terminal posts, line posts, top rail and terminal bracing) to conform to the most common ASTM specifications. Compared to our residential grade material, schedule 40 chain link pipe is much thicker, heavier and stronger. To complement thicker pipe, these industrial chain link fences call for a heavier mesh (often 9 or 8).
What does Schedule 40 mean?
"Schedule" refers to the thickness of a pipe wall (terminal posts, line posts & top rails when referring to chain link) and therefore how strong it is and how much pressure it can handle. Schedule 40 piping is rated to withstand no less than 140 psi. The picture below shows schedule 20 pipe (posts) on the left and the thicker schedule 40 on the right.
